Maren H. Jensen was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She earned her B.F.A. from Barnard College of Columbia University as well as studied advanced screenwriting and production design at Prague’s Film and Television School of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU). She recently earned her M.F.A in Film & Television Production from University of Southern California’s world renowned School of Cinematic Arts, where she studied production design and directing. Maren’s work as a production designer has been featured in a number of publications, including the May 2018 issue of American Cinematographer magazine, where she was interviewed and written about for her work on the film Wyrm (Sundance Official Selection). She is one of the youngest members to be invited into the selective Production Designer’s Collective.
Maren has a background in fine arts, classical voice, piano, and theater. She attributes her introduction to the world of cinema to her family of fellow artists and filmmakers who inspired her to value the power of storytelling. Her approach to production design begins on a psychological level; she takes the opportunity to explore characters, dive into their psyches, uncover histories, and in turn, discover unique characteristics about them and the way they interact not only with their physical surroundings but also fellow characters. All of these components and the process of working together with a writer, director, cinematographer, and costume designer lead Maren’s vision of the characters’s physical world as it morphs and develops and finally transplants itself into reality. Maren’s passion for storytelling, character, and thorough research continue to teach her more about how to reflect a character’s inner emotions through the environments they create as well as those they either choose or are forced to exist within. The mix of psychological study as well as physical/tangible creation of these spaces are what continue to fuel Maren’s passion for design.
Having worked professionally in the art department on a number of projects, Maren continues to treasure the collaborative nature of the cinematic medium and industry. She considers each member of her team to be fundamental to the success of any projects with which she is involved. Maren strives to dedicate her efforts to telling human stories about all kinds of people, from all walks of life, and is ever determined to emphasize the power of humanity to rise above campaigns of hate, discrimination, and violence within and across cultures.
